Full Job Description
The Software Group Manager is responsible for the development and implementation of software for 100t + off-highway mining trucks. They have responsibility for the group that researches, develops, writes and tests software. The Software Group Manager is responsible to ensure that products developed meet the required cost targets, technical specifications, and, that projects are completed within the projected timelines. The Software Group Manager must work with cross-functional teams and departments involving core team members for important project decisions and actions. The company policies and procedures must be rigorously applied.
Designs, develops, and evaluates software code for control systems on mining equipment.
Manages distribution of control software on mining equipment and maintains overall code responsibility including drive control and peripherals (e.g. new technology).
Manages development, production, and validation testing of prototype software, systems, and/or electrical components.
Develops applications of controls, instruments, and systems for new products and improvement of existing products.
Manages and/or conducts field testing for optimization of control.
Sets priorities of software group.
Researches and develops solutions for system software required to meet specifications.
Analyzes and implements software tools necessary to perform validation, diagnostics, and commissioning.
Organizes software structure to ensure stable operating system.
Provides support for data management, reporting and fault analysis w/web based applications
Provides software support for advanced technology efforts (e.g. autonomy).
Responsible for remote diagnostic efforts (e.g. satellite communication) and support of third party interfaces.
Researches and implements fault detection algorithms and related reporting.
Evaluates alternative software programming tools and languages.
Estimates time and cost requirements for software related projects.
Interfaces with other groups/disciplines to create specifications that outline control system software necessary for haul truck functions.
Creates the algorithms and code necessary to control haul truck functions.
Creates and maintains documentation / specifications necessary to describe the software logic flow and architecture.
Works with Production Engineers to specify proper control components (PLC’s, mobile computers, HMI, and other associated hardware).
Responsible for implementing current software project management methods (e.g. Agile/SCRUM).
Works independently and as a team member with other engineers, designers, and production personnel or on ad hoc projects.
Participates in Engineering Development Program.
Directly supervises employees in the Software Group.
Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the Software Group.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
A Master Science Degree or Master of Engineering Degree (M.S./ M.E.) with 4 years of engineering experience or, a Bachelor’s Science (B.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering , Computer Engineering, or related engineering discipline with a minimum of 10 years working experience in the design and development of heavy industrial equipment. The candidate should have 2 years of experience in directly managing technical people.
Comprehensive knowledge of the design, specification, and utilization of PLC control on mobile equipment.
Knowledge of software programming tools (ex. CoDeSys, C++, etc.).
Ability to optimize, troubleshoot, and validate software code.
Knowledge of communication protocols (ex. RS232, CanOpen, J1939, etc.).
Knowledge of diagnostic and validation tools necessary to verify software stability and function.
Knowledge of functional safety principles for machines.
Ability to write specifications that describe software function.
Working knowledge of communication networks and vehicle communication bus architecture.
Knowledge of signal processing techniques.
Knowledge of all major truck systems and the interaction between systems, including drive systems, control systems, hydraulic systems, and mechanical systems.
Knowledge of project management principles relevant to software development.
Knowledge of Project Management tools (ex. Microsoft Project).
Ability to use MS Office.
Knowledge of BaaN system as it relates to truck BOM structure and inventory control.
Ability to read and write electrical and hydraulic schematics.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedure manuals.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.
Travel domestically and internationally up to 20% of the time.
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver license and passport.
Ability to maintain Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) certification.
